An estimated 15 cubic kilometers of magma was explosively erupted during 60 hours beginning on june 6th. The three most recent eruptions, which occurred 2 million, 1.3 million, and 640,000 years ago, resulted in a series of nested calderas forming what we know as yellowstone national park and its immediate vicinity.
